KUCHING: United People’s Party (UPP), which is seeking to rebrand as Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), said it appreciates Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) for acknowledging it as part of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

UPP president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh  said he thanked PBB vice president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for saying that  UPP is part of GPS, although not legally.

“By virtue of its presence in the state cabinet, UPP is already part of and with GPS,” he had said.

“I agree with Karim, all along we have been with Barisan Nasional and now we are with GPS,” he said when contacted  yesterday.

However, he said there had  not been any official invitation from GPS to UPP to join them, or told what to do yet.

“We will wait for GPS’ official launch on January 19  and after that we will wait and see,” he said.

Wong, who is also International Trade and E-Commerce Minister, then said it was never an issue for  UPP being a GPS-friendly party, and UPP will continue to pledge absolute loyalty to GPS and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“We are going to give our full support to all the policies laid out by  Johari in his fight to restore the rights of Sarawak” he stressed.

On another note, he said UPP is still waiting for the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to approve its new name and logo.

“I believe it will be approved any time soon,” he said.
