KUCHING: Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family, and Childhood Development Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah donated RM5,000 as an MRP grant to The Dance Academy.

According to Fatimah, an interview was held to look for a CEO to head the art council that the state government is looking to set up to further promote and nurture the growth of the arts in the state.

“Also in the pipeline is to transform the old State Legislative Assembly building into an arts centre not just for performances like dance and theatre, but to also hold art exhibitions.

“We are going this step-by-step as we realise that in order for Kuching to be a livable city, it must have a soul and without the arts, there is no soul,” she said while attending the Asia-Pacific Dance Competition at Imperial Hotel here on Thursday night.

Speaking on dance academies, Fatimah said that they are vital in helping to allow students to develop their interest and full potential in dancing.

“It also makes the students happy and helps to relieve them of their stress and we as parents are happy that The Dance Academy provides that avenue.

“We can also see that the arts bring people together, regardless of race and religion, and that is very important for us as a multi-racial and multi-religious society,” she said.

Also present during the event was Batu Kitang state assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.
