KUCHING: If you are a Malay Muslim, have you ever heard about moreh?

It is a feast at the mosque during Ramadan and Malay Muslims would prepare various meals to share during the breaking of fast, usually during the evening prayer (maghrib).

In the olden days, the tradition of moreh during Ramadan encouraged children and families to spend time at the mosque during the breaking of fast.

Other than breaking fast together, the Muslims then would mingle around and make friends while waiting for the night prayers (Isyak and tarawih).

With the passing of time, moreh is not as popular as before and has been forgotten not only in the cities but also many rural areas.

Many new generations may not hear of it.

This could be due to socio-cultural and socio-economic changes of the Malays themselves; they are now leading busier and more complicated lives.
