SIBU: The proposed Sarawak Youth Legislative Assembly (Dewan Belia) will create more opportunities for young talents interested in politics at a higher level.
Sarawak Youth MP, Mohamad Shahran Mohamad Lizamberi, said this idea, much like the Malaysian Youth Parliament, would nurture the skills of potential future leaders of Sarawak.
“The Dewan Belia will highlight the abilities of our young generation across various Sarawak districts,” he said in a statement today (Sept 5).
According to him, this proposal, originally from former Youth MP, Surai Abell, caught the attention of the Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, at a meeting in Kuching last month.
Mohamad Shahran emphasised the importance of fair and unbiased elections for the Dewan Belia members.
“We need careful elections to ensure deserving candidates get selected. Remember the old saying, ‘Quality over Quantity’. This is crucial when choosing representatives for our youth from different districts,” he noted.
The age criteria for candidates, he suggested, should be strictly between 18-28 years old, covering the 82 legislative assembly areas in Sarawak.
