KUCHING: The Sarawak Initiatives (TSI) is set to launch a series of nine talks aimed at educating Sarawak’s youth about the rich diversity of the state’s population.
Titled ‘The People of Sarawak’, these weekly talks will delve into the unique characteristics and traditions of all major ethnic groups in the state, including Sarawak Malays, Kedayan, Chinese, Melanau, Iban, Bidayuh, Kelabit and Sa’ban, Lun Bawang, Tabun, Tagal and Bisaya, Kayan and Kenyah, as well as the Penan and Punan.
Curated by Prof James Chin, the roster of speakers comprises local researchers who have dedicated themselves to understanding these diverse communities. Some of the speakers include Dr Ipoi Datan, Jayl Langub, Dr Charlie Ungang, Prof Dr Noria Tugang, Dr Valerie Mashman, Dr Rosalind Wan, Dora Jok, Dr Ling Huong Yian, Robinson Benedict Mugok and Dr Nur Aida Kipli.
The first talk is scheduled to commence on July 22 via Zoom webinar, in conjunction with Sarawak Day.
TSI president Sidi Munan expressed hopes that the talks would ignite curiosity among the youth and foster a deeper appreciation for their heritage.
“Sarawak’s multiculturalism is a hallmark of its identity. It is concerning that many young Sarawakians today are unaware of the true extent of the state’s diverse population. Even universities located in Sarawak do not offer courses on the diversity of Sarawak’s population,” he said on Thursday (July 20).
TSI is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to training the next generation of leaders to serve Sarawak and increase understanding of Sarawak identity.
Last year, TSI held its first series of leadership talks, which received a positive reception. Many young participants from the series are now actively involved in TSI-sponsored projects aimed at making Sarawak a better place.
