KUCHING: Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said there is a need for a thorough investigation into the case of a female detainee who was raped by a male detainee while under custody at the Miri police station.
She stressed that a very careful and detailed investigation on the case needs to be done without fear or favour.
“This is to regain the public’s confidence on the safety of detainees while still in lock-up,” she said on Sunday (Jan 17).
Fatimah said when she heard about the news she was horrified and astonished on how such an incident could happened.
“Of all places … in the police station lock-up,” she said.
“I am glad that swift action has been taken on the rape case. The male suspect has been charged in court on Jan 12, on the third day after the crime was committed, and the suspect pleaded guilty.”
