Three-cornered fight for Miri seat; Phang (GPS), Lai (PSB) and Chiew (PKR) to contest for the seat in the GE15.

MIRI: It is going to be a three-corner fight in Miri parliamentary seat this 15th general election (GE15), between Gabungan Parti Sarawak(GPS) Jeffery Phang, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Chiew Choon Man and Parti Sarawak Bersatu(PSB) Datuk Lawrence Lai.

The Election Commission returning officer (RO) Abdul Rahman Taupek has announced the three candidates contesting for the seat after receiving their nomination forms at the Miri Industrial Training Institute (ILP) nomination centre in Senadin today.

Lai, is also a former Miri mayor and SUPP member before joining PSB, meanwhile, both GPS and PKR candidates are new faces.

Miri seat has been held by former PKR MP, Dr Michael Teo since 2013, however, he was dropped; and replaced by a newcomer, Chiew 31.

Teo has also unexpectedly turned up this morning at the nomination centre, with some 100 Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters. His presence this morning was a surprise as he had stayed in since his name was dropped from contesting in GE15.

“I flew from Kuching (ro Miri) this morning to give and show my support to our candidate (Chiew), because I’m determined to ensure his victory,” he told the reporters when met outside the nomination centre.

In Bintulu, there will be a three-cornered fight between GPS, DAP and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who is contesting under GPS banner will be facing two challengers; Tony Chiew Chan Yew (DAP); and Duke Janteng (PH).

Earlier the Bintulu incumbent arrived at the centre with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) senior vice president Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom and Jepak assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip to file his nomination.

Meanwhile, EC has also confirmed that Sibuti parliamentary seat is set to see a three-cornered fight between GPS incumbent Lukanisman Awang Sauni, PKR Zulhaidah Suboh and Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) Bobby William.
