KUCHING: Police detained three locals on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in an operation codenamed Ops Mabuk last Sunday.
Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa disclosed that the operation involving 13 personnel, took place at Jalan Simpang Tiga from 9pm on Sunday night until early yesterday (May 16) morning.
During the operation, the team brought three men aged between 35 and 50, suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol, to the district police headquarters (IPD) to undergo breath analyser tests.
“Results found that two of them had alcohol content in their body exceeding the limit while the other tested negative.
“The two were later detained and they can be charged under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine up to RM30,000 or jail for a term up to five years,” he said.
Merbin stated that the police team also issued a total of 27 traffic summonses for various traffic offenses after inspecting 84 people in 71 vehicles.
The traffic offences included not wearing seat belts, no registration numbers, plate numbers that do not follow the regulations, failure to produce driving license, expired driving license, failure to display road tax, expired motor vehicle license, modified exhaust, failure to display the ‘P’ sign, incomplete vehicle accessory, and no side mirrors.
He assured that the police will conduct Ops Mabuk continuously to eradicate drunk drivers in an effort to reduce the rate of road accidents in the district.
