KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Sessions Court here sentenced three friends to 12 years in prison for deliberately setting fire to a house belonging to a woman in a case involving a foreign unlicensed moneylender (ah long).

Alexander Kimpin, Nelson Ajau and Then Shaw Nam each pleaded guilty before Judge Iris Awen Jon to a charge framed under Section 436 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Code.

They were jointly charged with deliberately setting fire to a house to cause destruction at Taman Hill View around 2.05am on July 7.

The court ordered their prison sentences to run from July 31.

In addition, Then was also sentenced to one year and ten months in prison after pleading guilty in the Magistrate’s Court for mischief by causing damage to property under Section 427 of the Penal Code.

It is understood that the house owner’s son had dealt with the ah long syndicate that offered personal loans on Facebook.

However, the victim (son) also suffered a loss of SG$32,000 to an online scam in addition to being the subject of extortion by the syndicate.

The victim, who worked in sales for ten years in Singapore, returned to Sarawak as soon as he heard that his family home had been burnt, which was believed to have been masterminded by the syndicate.

Meanwhile, in the Magistrate’s Court, two other men involved in the same incident were sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to making criminal intimidation.

Jee Eo Liang and Lai Shin Yung were charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code read with Section 34 of the Code.
