SIBU: An explosion occurred on a tanker under maintenance at Tanjung Manis Port yesterday leaving the captain and two dock workers injured.
In the 10.15 am incident, 17 crew and five dock workers were carrying maintenance works on the vessel registered under the name ‘Dong Fang Glory’.
The crew members and the other dock workers escaped unhurt.
The explosion caused a fire to break out on-board the tanker.
“The explosion caused two Berjaya Dockyard workers to suffer burns while the captain was slightly injured in the face,” said Sibu Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department chief, Misran Bisara.
Misran added that 12 firemen from Tanjung Manis and Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Stations were rushed to the scene, which was in the Belawai river where the ship was docked, following a distress call at 10.42 am.
He said that the fire was put out by the crew members and the firemen carried out ventilation work to make sure that the fire was completely extinguished.
“The cause of the explosion is still under investigation,” said Misran.
He added that the injured victims were sent to the Sibu Hospital.
