SIBU: Three men were arrested for playing mahjong illegally as well as violating the movement control order (MCO) on Saturday.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said that the trio was seen gambling during a raid at a premises at Lorong Sena 8, here at 4.20pm.

During the raid, police seized a wooden table, three plastic chairs, as well as mahjong sets.

According to him, the three offenders, aged between 54 and 61 years old were arrested under Section 6 (1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 as well as Regulation 11 (1) (No 3) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020.

“The suspects have been handed over to investigating officers for further action,” Stanley said in a statement.

He added that the offenders will be released on police bail once all the evidence and other elements of the investigation have been completed.
