KUCHING: Three more industrial and commercial sectors have been given the green light to operate throughout the third phase of the movement control order (MCO) starting today.
State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas announced yesterday that the sectors included construction, utilities, electronics, and computer repair services.
In the construction sector, Uggah said only important and necessary road maintenance work was allowed.
“Contractors are also allowed to carry out maintenance and cleaning work at construction sites to prevent potential harm to the general public as well as the possibility of breeding Aedes mosquitoes in stagnant water,” said Uggah.
For utility services, Uggah said repair works related to basic utilities such as fresh water supply and electricity were allowed.
“In fact, we have allowed these activities since phase two of the MCO but there was a bit of a misunderstanding regarding the implementation.
“There is a need for us to make sure that when there is a problem with basic utilities, the contractors must be allowed to provide their services,” he said.
For electronics and computer repair, Uggah emphasised that no sales activities were allowed throughout the MCO period.
“Businesses are only allowed to provide maintenance services and repair. The shops operate from 7am to 7pm only.”
Uggah also clarified that some manufacturing and small-medium enterprises (SMEs), agricultural supplies, hardware supplies, and car workshops would continue their operations.
He said SDMC was studying the situation with auto workshops as there were complaints from the public that they attracted large groups of people.
“SDMC is also studying the situation in green and yellow zones to determine which economic activities could be allowed to improve the lives of the people.
“It will be decided soon and we will make the announcement once approval had been given by the chief minister.”
