SIBU: The three Voluntary Patrol Scheme (SRS) teams in the Sibu division have been named as the most active teams in 2018 and each will receive a community grant of RM10,000 from the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
Unity division officer of Sibu Division National Integration Department Siti Nurfatimah Hussen said the SRS teams were SRS Kampung Datu Baru, SRS Sekuau Relocation Scheme and SRS Sibu Jaya Zone 3.
According to her the grant will be channelled to the department while the selection of the SRS is based on the activity of patrolling to help authorities curb crime and social activities in the local communities.
“Half of the grant will be used to finance crime prevention programmes with PDRM and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) while the other half is to buy patrolling equipment.
“SRS should implement programmes with PDRM and AADK during the period up to June next year,” he told reporters at a dinner hosted by KRT Kampung Datu Baru, Datu Baru Village Development and Security Committee and the committee of Surau Darul Jannah of Kampung Datu Baru on Sunday night.
Siti Nurfatimah therefore said the SRS teams, mostly comprising senior citizens, had to work hard to attract many youths to participate in patrols in their respective areas.
“So please get engaged with the youths, maybe they do not know the existence of SRS or do not know how to join the SRS, and so the efforts to help the authorities to combat criminal activities through patrols could be further enhanced,” she explained.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Hamdan Jaiee said his department is working hard to attract local youths to participate in patrols in the village area.
He said although most SRS Kampung Datu Baru members were senior citizens, they were able to take part in the patrolling twice a week.
