KUCHING: The State government will set up three new trade offices in three countries soon, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He added that the three trade offices will be set up in Singapore, Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei) and Pontianak (West Kalimantan, Indonesia). The office in Singapore will be set up in January next year.
“The Singapore government has agreed to our set up of trade office in the country and it will allow our exporters to meet the business community in Singapore,” he said during the launching of Sarawak International Business Exhibition and Conference (SIBEC) 2018 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here yesterday.
Abang Johari added that the trade offices will also be the state’s contact point to export the local produce to Singapore.
“Singapore has certain standards that we need to meet.
“Once you meet the standards, you will meet the international standards,” he pointed out.
He also said that by setting up the trade offices, it will allow the state to move forward and the offices will be the base for manufacture, investors, tourism as well as as an engagement between state and business community in Singapore.
“The same will apply to Brunei and I’m happy that Sultan Brunei has agreed to set up the trade office in Bandar Seri Begawan.
“The next office will be in West Kalimantan, Pontianak,” he said.
Abang Johari added that with the three trade offices, business community including Sarawak Business Federation will have the opportunity to expand their business network in other countries.
“Sarawak will have its own trade offices, trade diplomats and civil servants.
“I hope the business community will respond positively and be international in their outlook. That way, Sarawak will be on the right path,” said the Chief Minister.
