KUCHING: Three newborn were adopted as Red Crescent babies in conjunction with the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day today.

The first baby was born at 1.49 am, weighing 2.3kg to an Iban couple.

The second baby came into the world at 2.37am to a Bidayuh couple. The baby weighs 2.68kg.

Not long after, the third baby was born at 3.10am, weighing 2.66 kg to a Malay couple.

Present to handover hampers to the mothers at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) today was Datin Seri Airi Abdul Manan, wife of Datuk Seri Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg, the advisor of Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Kuching Branch.

Meanwhile, MRCS in a statement said May 8 marked World Red Cross/Red Crescent Day and is a time to celebrate the spirit of humanitarianism and recognise the individuals who made a difference in their communities.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Everything we do comes #fromtheheart’.

“We want to celebrate the people in our communities, the ‘person next door’, who often are the first ones to step up and support those in need around them.

“They could be someone at work; a neighbourhood business-owner; a Red Cross or Red Crescent community volunteer; someone at the gym, shop or market we go to; or someone living close by who has always been by our side.

“There are many Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers around the world, offer care, a hand of compassion and a life-changing breath of humanity to those who are most vulnerable.

“We celebrate millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff around the world, who every day in their respective countries, regions and communities carry forward the determination of Henry Dunant to provide hope and dignity in the midst of despair to people in vulnerable situations without distinction or thought of personal gain,” said the society.

Hampers and food packs were sponsored by Malaysian Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS).

Also present were SGH director Dr Ngian Hie Ung, MRCS Kuching branch deputy chairman John Jong, MRCS Kuching branch nursing superintendent Chin Siew Kiaw and other MRCS members.
