MIRI: Three elderly men were among 12 detained by a Criminal Investigation (CID) Department task force here during two separate illegal cockfighting raids held here on Sunday (May 2).
All suspects, aged between 18 to 68, were hauled up during the 3.15pm and 4.20pm raids in a banana orchard at Kuala Baram and inside a landfill along Jalan Lutong-Kuala Baram.
Police also seized 12 dead roosters, two weighing scales, two betting boards, and four sharp spurs, said Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari when contacted.
All suspects and the seized items were brought to Miri central police station (CPS) for questioning. The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance 1962, which carries a maximum fine of RM1,000 and up to three months’ jail.
