KUCHING: Yesterday was the first day of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. It was both a thrilling and nervous day for the candidates, their parents and teachers.

At Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuching in Petra Jaya here, parents started coming to school as early as 6 am to give moral support and words of encouragement to their children.

Yesterday, the candidates sat for their first written test for Bahasa Melayu.

New Sarawak Tribune interviewed some parents for their thoughts and feelings on the big day.

I understand how my son feels today. He is my eldest child so I do not want to pressure him. I just hope for the best and that he will pass all the SPM subjects that he sits for. I believe that he is ready to face this examination head on and that all his hard work will pay off.

I have high hopes for my child and hope all the students sitting for SPM will have excellent results. As a teacher, I know the teachers here have struggled and helped the students day and night to study. As a parent, I believe my child will do his best in the exam.

I would like to thank the school for allowing us, parents, to be here for our children during this major exam. I believe that this moral support from parents will further boost the students’ confidence in facing this major examination. For that, I wish all the students the best for SPM 2022.

I am very excited that the most awaited day has come for SPM 2022 candidates. I am a teacher and my priority is to give my utmost support to my daughter here. I would like to thank the school for giving us this opportunity to come here and give children moral support. Having this programme shows that the school has always been concerned with the students’ mentality. I truly believe that this programme of allowing the parents to be here will give more confidence to the students and have a big impact on their results later on.

I believe that having parents here and allowing them to pray alongside their children before they enter the examination hall will further boost the kids’ confidence in facing this major exam. Therefore, I would like to thank the school for allowing not only teachers but also parents to be here to give their moral support to the children. We know how nerve wrecking it can be on this big day but having all of us here will at least put the children’s mind at ease.
