TELOK MELANO: The locals here are more than happy with the newly-completed Telok Melano-Sematan Road which was open to public and officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on Saturday.
Azizul Annuar Adenan, the youngest son of the late chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, said he was touched by Johari’s commitment in continuing the legacy of his father’s dream.
“As everyone knows, the idea for this stretch of road came from my father.
“I want to convey my appreciation to the previous government and the Sarawak government for making my father’s dream come true. Tanjong Datu, Telok Melano and Sematan were always close to his heart,” he said.
Azizul added the completion of the road would improve the economy in the areas.
“All the way from Sematan, there is a lot of empty land which will be used to build houses, resorts or other projects.
“This road is going to attract youths, especially the 4×4 enthusiasts as there are many tracks here,” he added
Azizul said the local community could use the opportunity sell food or local products by the roadside during special events.
Meanwhile, Yan Salleh, 29, a hawker from Telok Melano, said the road would definitely encourage more people to visit the places.
“It will also be easier for us to come to Sematan to buy things,” she said.
Rimuh Serit, 48, from Kampung Bukit Papan, said he was grateful to the late Tok Nan for suggesting the road.
“We feel very lucky now. Last time, we had to take a boat from Sematan to go to Telok Melano. The road will allow people from the villages to sell their local produce in Sematan,” she said.
Prem Notes, 43, from Kampung Peninjau Baru, also said the road would increase the incomes of the local folks and improve Sarawak’s economy.
