SERIAN: An attempt to smuggle in illicit cigarettes and alcoholic drinks worth more than RM300,000, was thwarted by the police in Serian market yesterday.
The operation carried out by Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID), took place around 4.40am when the team spotted a suspiciously parked vehicle behind a shop.
Serian OCPD DSP Aswandy Anis revealed that the team found two local men aged 30 and 33, inside the vehicle.
“Inspection was later conducted on the lorry and it led to the finding of several boxes containing duty-not-paid alcoholic beverages and cigarettes.
“A total of 2,160 boxes of alcoholic beverages and 33 boxes of cigarettes with an estimated value of RM350,000, were seized as evidence,” he said.
Both the suspects and the seizures were taken to Serian police headquarters for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
