KAPIT: Tian Huat team emerged as the winners of this year’s Kapit Inter-Team Badminton Competition with All Care Pharmacy in second place.
Cahaya Mas were third and Hong Hing Trading fourth place. Two other teams Bahagia and Voonlywood received consolation prizes.
Tian Huat team received the champion trophy, medals and RM800 cash prize while All Care Pharmacy team brought home RM600, a trophy and medals and Cahaya Mas team received RM400, a trophy and medals.
The consolation teams received RM200 and medals each.
Six teams comprising 60 players took part in the competition.
Bukit Goram Assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat officiated at the closing ceremony of the competitions which was jointly organised by the Kapit Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Youth Wing Kapit Foochow Association at the Indoor Stadium at Jalan Bleteh, here, on Wednesday evening.
Among those present with Jamit at the closing cum prize giving ceremony were Kapit Resident Joseph Belayong, Deputy Kapit Resident Galong Luang, organising chairman Wong Kiiun Tee, chairman of Kapit Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Dato Yong Hua Sying, chairman of Kapit Foochow Association Sii Bang Ee, chairman United Chinese Association Kapit Liew Song Swee and Chinese community leaders include Pemanca Yong Thu Fook, Penghulu Sia Shui Poh, Penghulu Wong Kie Ing, Kapitan Yiap Yii Hoo and Kapitan Yap Hui Li.
At the closing ceremony Jamit called upon youths and sport clubs to be pro-active to hold more sporting events to create healthy activities for the people here.
“In Kapit, we have so many youths and sport clubs and I urged you to take the initiative and to be pro-active to organise more sporting events to create healthy activities for the people here. It doesn’t matter what kind of sports, be it badminton, futsal or volleyball, the response is always overwhelming.
“By organising such healthy activities helps to inculcate positive values on the importance of physical exercise to keep fit. A healthy person definitely is more productive,” said Jamit.
He urged the local sports clubs to join effort with other non-governmental organisations like SADIA (Sarawak Dayak Iban Association) or SDNU (Sarawak Dayak National Union) to joint hold sport competitions in future to attract more participants to be participated by all races in Kapit.
In this way, it could help to bring people together despite their different backgrounds, he added.
“Kapit is unique because we are proud to tell the outside people that we are the best example of 1Malaysia despite of diversity in race and social practices. We live in friendliness.
“This spirit of neighbourhood should also be extended into our activities like sport event. Among the examples is football competitions where the players were Malay, Iban, Orang Ulu and Chinese. They all come together for healthy competitions and for the love of the sport,” said Jamit.
He said badminton is very popular among the people here. It is played by all ages and both gender – men and women. Among the players were school children (youth), adult and veteran. In this way, it promotes friendship and team spirit.
He lauded the Chinese Chamber of Commerce Kapit and the Youth Wing of Kapit Foochow Association for holding the sport event.
“By working together, we can overcome the shortness of manpower or resources. As the elected people representative , I will give my full support to the organiser because it not only create an activity but also bring the people closer together”, said Jamit
Jamit announced a government grant of RM7,000 to the organising committee before giving away the prizes.
