MIRI: Sarawak’s chef de mission for the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA XXI), Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, has called for a radical overhaul of the state’s sports development strategy.
Rentap said the current system is “stunting” the growth of athletes.
“We need to think outside the box,” he said at the SUKMA media room yesterday (Aug 19).
“We’ve been doing things the same way for too long. We need to create a system that supports athletes from the ground up and provides them with clear pathways to success.”
Rentap suggested regional cooperation with Brunei and Indonesia as a potential game-changer.
“This initiative could be a game-changer,” he said, highlighting the potential benefits for athletes and the overall sports ecosystem.
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, and Pahang’s SUKMA contingent chef de mission, YM Dato’ Indera Tun Putera Abdul Mubin Shah, were also present.
