MIRI: Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting on Wednesday morning instructed the installation of the 30 metre-tall telecommunication (telco) tower in Taman Delight Lorong 8 near Miri Airport here to stop with immediate effect after residents protested against it.

The instruction was given today (Wednesday) morning after he visited the area.

“It will not proceed until a solution is found,” Ting, who is also Piasau assemblyman, told the local media.

He said the residents were worried that living too near the tower would put their health at risk, especially from radiation.

Ting (clad in yellow attire) speaking to the local media after inspecting the area and meeting the residents on the matter.

“I was shocked when told that the contractor had completed the installation on Tuesday within three hours despite the objection and that is why I came today. After meeting the residents here, I have   instructed the wiring work to stop with immediate effect,” Ting explained.

He assured the residents that wiring work on the telco tower would not proceed.

Ting disclosed that the land (over half an acre) on which the tower was being built had been approved for the construction of a mini recreational park.

“That was why I was surprised when the contractor proceeded with the installation of the telco tower,” he said.
