SIBU: Community associations play a huge role in fostering social harmony and enhancing the quality of life for their members.
Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing praised these groups for their contribution to societal harmony and unity.
“You are closest to the grassroots, understand the real people’s livelihood demands, and can promote the spiritual value and importance of community service to everyone in the process,” he said at the Grand Height Community Association (GHCA)’s Chinese New Year gala dinner and elder veneration ceremony, held at the United Chinese Association premises on Sunday.
His speech was read by Datuk Teo Boon Siew, chairman of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Dudong Branch, who represented Tiong at the event.
Tiong also concerned over the disinterest of the youth in political and social issues but remained optimistic about their potential to contribute positively to society.
He urged associations like GHCA to inspire young people to engage in community service and enhance their civic awareness.
He also praised GHCA for incorporating the traditional virtue of filial piety and respect for the elderly into their event.
“The elderly are not a burden but rather a source of guidance for the present generation,” he added.
Also present were the paramount leader of the Sibu Chinese Community Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming and GHCA chairman Kapitan Raymond Tiong.
