BAU: Datuk Henry Harry Jinep revealed that the Public Works Department (JKR) plans to propose improvements to the Tondong-Jalan Sebuku route leading to the Bau Police Station to address its susceptibility to flooding.

During the soft opening of the Tondong-Sebuku Bridge and Tondong Multipurpose Hall on Wednesday (Jan 10), the Deputy Minister for Transport (Riverine and Marine) announced that the 4.7km road upgrade would cost approximately RM25mil.

“The JKR will present the proposal to their higher authorities, and our ministry has requested a comprehensive presentation for the road upgrade, ensuring improved suitability for larger vehicles. This presentation is intended for inclusion in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP),” the Tasik Biru assemblyman explained.

He noted that the enhancement of this infrastructure requires a focused rebranding discourse aimed at attracting visitors and fostering cultural vibrancy.

“This involves planning ethnic Chinese events and establishing a foundation for socioeconomic activities.

“Initiatives such as bringing in singers from places like Singkawang and opening stalls are poised to inject vitality into Tondong’s cultural landscape. Hence, we call upon young entrepreneurs to set the stage for bustling business activities.”

The upgrade, he added, will provide smooth connectivity in traffic flow via the new Tondong-Sebuku bridge to Siniawan, Bau, and Tasik Biru, compared to the previous lengthy opposing road.

He also highlighted that the opening of the bridge aims to facilitate residents or road users before the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.

“In addition to easing transportation for residents in the Tondong, Sebuku, and Singai areas, the bridge’s opening will also facilitate travel from Kuching to Bau or from Bau to Kuching.

“Now, the journey from Tondong to the Bau Police Station through the market area only takes about five minutes.”

Moreover, Henry noted that the construction of the bridge, which commenced in 2019 with an expenditure of RM10.5mil, was delayed due to the pandemic.
