KUCHING: It is lucrat ive t o rear the Malay Ayam Serama as a hobby, according to Rudiman Mazlan, 41, breeder and seller of the bantam breed of chicken originating from Malaysia within the last 50 years. A winning bird, he added, could fetch between RM2,000 and RM4,000.
Rudiman has two winning birds – King 650 and Fighter Cock – which won the Malay Ayam Serama beauty contest in Sadong Jaya and Simunjan last year respectively.
“I am wi l l ing to sel l King 650 for RM4,000; i t won the beauty contest in Sadong Jaya and came second in the beauty contest in Simunjan last year.
Meanwhile, I am selling Fighter Cock which won the beaut y contest in Simunjan last year for RM2,000,”he said at hi s Malay Ayam Serama stall during the Muda Hashim Garage Sale 2017 at Jalan Kulas, Satok, here recently.
Rudiman, well known among the state’s Malay Ayam Serama breeders as “Man K”, revealed the two bi rds were the best among the 200 chickens that he was breeding at his resi – dence at Samar iang Aman, Petra Jaya. “ I hav e a l s o s old a bi r d called Unname for RM1,500. Although it has never competed in a beauty contest, it has the potential to win.
This bird, which has beautiful feathers, can pose and walk with pride and style when placed on the table,” he said. Rudiman added that good Malay Ayam Serama could easily fetch RM500 each.
The Air Force veteran said the sales of the chickens could bring him an extra income of up to RM2,000 a month Rudiman, who is also advisor of the Kuching-Sri Aman Ayam Serama Art and Beauty Association, said some of his best birds were bought by lovers of the birds from Thailand and Indonesia.
“I have sold a Malay Ayam Serama for RM12,000 to a buyer from Thai land and another bird for RM7,000 to a buyer from Bali, Indonesia,”he said.
Rudiman became interested in breeding the bi rds while working in Kuantan, Pahang and began sel l ing them two years after he retired from the Air Force because of growing interes t in the Malay Ayam S erama beaut y contes t s i n Samarahan Division.
