KUCHING: Malaysia may have to consider a total lockdown if the Covid-19 pandemic goes on unabated after March 31, said Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos.
He said that regular life would undoubtedly be disrupted if a total lockdown was initiated, but for the society’s sake as well as the nation’s, the people would have to comply fully with what a lockdown would entail.
He said that the government had taken the right step by initiating the movement control order (MCO) from March 18 to 31.
“Now, many other affected nations are in lockdown with total closure except for essential services,” he said.
He pointed out that there seemed to be a daily increase in Covid-19 cases in the country ― another 153 new cases were reported yesterday, bringing the national total to 1,183 cases as of noon.
Minos said that the crisis had indeed created some stress and concern as many were stuck at home and worried for their relatives and friends elsewhere.
“However, we must follow the government’s order for the good of all. This crisis is like a war against an enemy.
“Each and every Malaysian must take the instructions of the government and authorities very seriously. Just stay put and stay safe at home,” he said.
He stressed that non-essential businesses had to remain closed during the MCO period.
“Those who have fever, cough and breathing problems must immediately go for a check-up at the nearest hospital,” urged Minos.
