KUCHING: The federal Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) is currently reviewing the Tourism Industry Act 1992.
Its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the move was necessary to ensure that the legislation was in tandem with current tourism trends.
“We are going to improve it because the act has been there for a long time so therefore, it deserves to have a new brief,” she said.
She told reporters this after attending a dinner with the state tourism, arts and culture industry players at a hotel here on Thursday.
Nancy also disclosed that informal discussions were ongoing on moves for Sarawak to rejoin the Malaysian Tourism Board.
“We have been discussing among ourselves but these remain at the informal level.
“We’ll have to bring this to the cabinet in order to reinstate the state’s participation on the board,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said he had discussed the matter with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, saying that the prospects were looking good.
In 2017, Sarawak withdrew its representative from the board after a disagreement with the federal government over the introduction of a new tourism tax.
