KUCHING: The Sarawak government’s commitment to set aside RM100 billion for strategic infrastructure is expected to drive Sarawak’s economy forward, with tourism positioned as one of the key beneficiaries.
In stating this, Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the increased investment for the coming years will definitely boost the local tourism industry.
“With the Premier allocating RM100 billion, not only for tourism but across various sectors, this will significantly contribute to Sarawak’s economic growth, state development, and directly or indirectly, the tourism industry as well,” he said.
He said this to reporters after the launching of the Pristine Sea: Bringing The Ocean Back Exhibition at Borneo Cultures Museum here today (Nov 23).
Sarawak Tribune on Nov 22 reported that the state government aims to secure RM100 billion in investments over the next five years, primarily for strategic infrastructure development to bolster the state’s economy.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state wants to invest in additional infrastructure to complement its existing assets, with investment to also fund the development of new airport and port infrastructures.
Beyond infrastructure, Sarawak is also prioritising investments in the energy sector, particularly renewable energy sources like hydrogen.
Commenting on the allocation for the tourism sector under the recently tabled 2025 State Budget, Abdul Karim said over RM100 million has been allocated for the tourism industry.
“On top of that, there is also a budget for events and improving infrastructure. All of this is geared towards developing the tourism industry,’ he said.
He said that the state’s tourism industry has been on the rise, having drawn four million visitors by early November.
“But beyond just numbers, you can see around us, there are many events like musicals, cultural events, and food festivals. These are clear indicators that the tourism industry is thriving,” he said.
On the potential areas of focus, Abdul Karim assured that no areas will be left out.
“Offhand, I cannot specify how much will go to the creative industries, performing arts, or how much for investments in overseas tourism promotions.
“But no areas will be left out. Whether it’s theatre, performing arts, literature, or sports tourism, everyone will receive a share of the allocation,” he said.
When tabling the 2025 State Budget, Abang Johari, who is also the Finance and New Economy Minister said RM174 million will be allocated to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts next year for its operations and implementation of various tourism marketing and promotion programmes.
