MULU: About 10 tourists were safely rescued from the Sungai Paku waterfall in Mulu National Park today (Sept 18) after they were stranded by flash floods due to heavy rain.
This group included five local tourists, a Japanese tourist, and four tourist guides.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Operation Centre reported that a distressed call was made by the Mulu Mountain Cave Search and Rescue (MOCSAR) Team to the Marudi Fire Station, informing them of the incident at 12 pm on the same day.
Thanks to the quick thinking and skills of the four tourist guides, all of them were guided to safety using alternative routes. No one was injured in the incident.
For context, the Gunung Mulu National Park is famous for its rich biodiversity and unique karst formations. It’s one of the most researched tropical karst areas globally.
Spanning 52,864 hectares, the park boasts 17 vegetation zones and is home to approximately 3,500 species of vascular plants.
