KUCHING: Sarawak’s trade volume increased by 51 per cent to reach RM166.15 billion last year compared to 2021 when it amounted to RM109.89 billion.
Deputy chief executive officer (CEO) of the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) Abu Bakar Yusof said Sarawak had recorded a growth in exports during the year.
“Exports showed an increase of 53 per cent to RM 131.76 billion compared to RM86.32 billion in 2021, while imports amounted to RM34.29 billion in 2022.
“This further proves how the import and export sectors contribute much to the Sarawak economy,” he said.
Towards this end he hoped that micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) continue to find ways to increase and expand their exports on a global scale.
“That is why we are here to guide and assist each and everyone of you on how you can explore and export your product to the international market,” he said.
He said this this during Matrade;s Benchmarking Programme on Global Supply Chain and Sustainability here on today (Feb 28).
On another note, Abu Bakar stated that Malaysia’s trade volume was continuing to record an outstanding achievement, showing an increase of up to 28 per cent.
“The country has reached a total trade of up to RM2.85 trillion.
“We shall continue to move forward and strive harder than before to retain our import and export value,” he added.
Abu Bakar said that Matrade will continue to engage more with SMEs in Sarawak.
“We will also work with the state government on achieving the aspiration,” he added.
