JALAN SEMERAH PADI-JALAN DEPO

KUCHING: The traffic congestion at a roundabout near Jalan Semerah Padi and Jalan Depo here is set to improve as Jalan Tan Sri Abang Ikhwan will be upgraded into a dual carriageway, said Samariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

Speaking to the press after performing the earth-breaking ceremony at the roundabout in Samariang yesterday, she said the construction of the 1.7km carriageway would be carried out today by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

“The problem (traffic jam) has persisted for years, and I believe this is the right time for us to proceed with the upgrading work.”

She added that once the RM5.2 million upgrading work is completed in about 12 months, it would change the landscape of Kampung Semerah Padi.

“The daily traffic congestion at the roundabout here usually involves around 600m of the road. This route is one of the popular ones, especially the interlink Samariang-Matang road.

“The project is implemented by DBKU and funded by the state government,” she added.

Asked whether the construction work would involve any land acquisition, Sharifah Hasidah said, “We are just upgrading the road. Maybe it affects some of the hawker stalls on the side of the road.”

“Overall, they have agreed to move to other places for temporary during the construction work,” she added.
