BINTULU: The Ministry of Transport Sarawak and the Sarawak Road Safety Council (MKJR) will revive the traffic game competition to promote and raise awareness on road safety among school students.

Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin said the revival of the traffic game is similar to the annual Shell traffic competition, which was last held in 2015, but will be revamped for Sarawak.

He said the event will be organised at various levels, starting from school level, followed by divisional level before moving on to state level competitions.

Lee said reviving the traffic game provides an opportunity for the government to educate the younger generation, especially children, on road safety.

“Children in our schools can learn about traffic, road safety, and traffic rules and regulations,” he said after inspecting the Bintulu Traffic Park in front of the Bintulu Basketball Stadium, here, yesterday.

Lee said the traffic game is a simulation of real-life situations where they can learn about road safety.

“They learn about traffic rules and they will be fined if they violate any rules during the game.

“My ministry, together with MKJR, will take this initiative to revive the traffic game in Sarawak as one of the road safety education programmes for our school students,” he added.

Lee said based on his inspection, there are several damages that need to be repaired at the Bintulu Traffic Park.

Among them, the drainage system that needs to be repaired as well as the pavilion.

According to him, the local authorities, namely Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), have estimated the cost for the purpose of repairing and upgrading the traffic park.

“In fact, parks like this are under the maintenance of BDA. For example, in Kuching, it’s under the jurisdiction of Kuching South City Council,” he said, adding that there are six traffic parks in Sarawak, in Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Sarikei, and Sri Aman, and the upgrading works will involve local authorities in each respective division.
