KUCHING: Most Sarawakians love to do things at the last minute, including paying their traffic summonses.
On Wednesday, both the Simpang Tiga police and the Kubah Ria station traffic counters were opened to late payers of summonses, offering a 50 per cent discount, held in conjunction with Ops Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
In just a day, RM358,010 were collected from 3,497 summonses.
Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement head Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said 20 personnel manned the 14 counters at the two police districts.
The one-day discount was held from 8.30am to 3pm. All traffic summonses can be paid there except those from the Road Transport Department or court cases.
While most people would shun the police station unless necessary, a large crowd was already there since 7.30am.
There was no end to the line and many would go away when they saw the crowd.
An office staff who turned up at noon asked a woman in front how long she had been waiting and when he was told, “45 minutes,” he shook his head and left.
