KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) was urged to set up a team of traffic wardens to direct traffic and reduce the daily congestion at Mile 4 and Mile 7 Jalan Penrissen.

“As the Transport Minister has fully authorised all councils to have their own traffic wardens, this is one way to reduce the traffic congestion,” said Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Dr Sim made this suggestion in his speech during the council¡¯s appreciation dinner last Saturday at Imperial Hotel here.

“Besides complaints about traffic jams, I have also received complaints about security. Shop owners are always worried about being robbed, which makes closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) very much needed”, he said.

He suggested that CCTVs  be used to monitor crimes as they happen in an effort to lower the number of crimes in Padawan area.

On his part, PMC chairman, Lo Khere Chang, talked about the progress made by the council.

“The growth rate of development of properties in our area is 3.5 percent per annum which is 2,500 new properties every year,” said Lo.

“The council is always busy maintaining roads and drains. Roads in housing estates have been upgraded and most village roads have been tar-sealed.

“This year, the council has implemented 241 projects. Last year, there were 226,” he said.

At the event, Dr Sim also handed over RM10,000 to the council¡¯s staff club for their future activities.
