SERIAN: A one-year-and-seven-month-old boy drowned in Kampung Bunan Pondok, Mongkos, here on Thursday morning.
According to Serian District police chief DSP Neil Beginda, at about 8.50 am, authorities were alerted by the medical officer on duty at the Bunan Gega Health Clinic regarding the incident.
“The child fell into a fish pond just outside his family’s residence.
“The fish pond, constructed with cement and tiles, measured 22 feet wide, 25 feet long, and 3 feet deep. Its proximity, situated merely 10 metres behind the kitchen of the house, made the accident all the more tragic.
“Following the incident, the victim’s father and relatives rushed the baby to the Bunan Gega Serian Health Clinic, where the attending doctor confirmed the child has passed away,” he said.
A post mortem on the victim conducted at the Serian Hospital revealed no signs of injury or foul play.
The victim, identified as the youngest child of the family, was later claimed by his father on the same day and was laid to rest at St Jude’s Bunan Cemetery.
Authorities have classified the case as a sudden death.
