KUCHING: Since the next state election is expected to be held soon, Persatuan Pemangkin Daya Masyarakat (Rise of Sarawak Efforts or Rose) will hold a training programme for election observers in collaboration with Akademi Pilihan Raya.
In a statement issued yesterday, Rose stated that it was its intention to recruit and train volunteer election observers before the state election.
“We therefore urge citizens regardless of their backgrounds to attend the course before volunteering in the coming state election.
“We invite all citizens, in particular undergraduates or postgraduate students, private sector workers, members of NGOs and faith-based organisations including people in rural areas, longhouses or villages to join this programme,” the statement said.
It further said that the participation of the public was not limited to just voting, but also volunteering as election observers.
“Their involvement can ensure a clean and fair election. The choice of state government should ideally be made in an election that is clean and fair,” it continued.
Election observers prevent or report wrongdoing by any political party such as bribery, vote buying, double voting, inciting ill will among voters or instigating hostilities, etc.
They monitor campaign activities by candidates or their surrogates, and if there is any wrongdoing, they lodge reports with the police of the Election Commission.
This training programme will be held from 8.30am to 5pm on Feb 23 (Sunday) at Lot 10 Boutique Hotel here.
The course is free of charge, but the participants should sign up early due to limited seats.
