KUCHING: The transition from the yellow liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder to red gas cylinder may be a cumbersome process but a necessary one for the benefit of the state.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said it would fulfil Sarawak’s aspiration for gas distribution autonomy envisaged by former chief minister, the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem when he insisted that Sarawak be excluded from the Malaysia’s Gas Distribution Bill.

In a Facebook post, he said, there were over one million gas cylinders in circulation for the use of Sarawak’s 2.9 million population.

Thus, he thanked Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Janin Girie and his team for being responsive on some of the teething issues on the ground during this transition from yellow gas cylinder by MyGaz Sdn Bhd (MyGaz) to the red gas cylinder by the state-owned Petros.

“The way forward is (actually) to have piped gas to every house like in Miri which only costs 20 per cent of the gas cylinders. I am looking forward to piped gas for Kuching under Petros,” he said.

Dr Sim also shared that PETROSNiaga Sdn Bhd (PETROSNiaga), the retail liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) arm for Petros holds 100 per cent market share for subsidised 14 kg LPG cylinders for household use in Sarawak, effective Dec 1, last year.

The appointment enables PETROSNiaga, he said, to safeguard affordable supply and ensure quality improvements in the LPG industry in Sarawak.

There will be no additional cost when customers switch from other LPG cylinders to Petros’ (red) or Gas Petronas’ (green) LPG cylinders – aside from the refill cost which remains unchanged at RM26.60 for self-collection.

There is also no time limit for customers to carry out the one-to-one cylinder exchange.

Both green and red LPG cylinders can be used interchangeably.

Meanwhile, customers are advised to carry out the exchange after they have used up the contents of their LPG cylinder to avoid wastage.

Subsidised 14kg Petros LPG cylinders are available for purchase through PETROSNiaga’s statewide network of 65 dealers and 280 sub-dealers.
