KUCHING: Three locals were rescued after being trapped in a teachers’ quarters that caught fire on the first floor at SK Sungai Maong, Jalan Stapok yesterday (Sept 7).

No injuries were reported among the occupants, consisting of two women and a man, in the 6.38pm incident.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Batu Lintang and Padungan station were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call.

Upon arrival, they discovered a fire in one unit on the first floor of the three-storey block, with three occupants trapped on the second floor.

Extinguishing works were performed using water sourced from their fire truck, while rescue works were carried out using a ladder to assist the occupants to safety.

The blaze, which completely destroyed the affected unit, was brought under control at 7.33pm. It was reported the block houses six units.

Once the situation was deemed safe and there was no risk of reignition, the team ended the operation at 8.15pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred is still under investigation.
