Sukma incentives to acknowledge athletes’ dedication

KUCHING: Some 36 athletes from Sarawak received their incentives for bringing home the gold, silver and bronze medals in the three sports, namely weightlifting, bowling and shooting during the 19th Sukma in Perak last year.

The incentives were from Sarawak Weightlifting Association, Amateur Bowling (Tenpin) Association of Sarawak and Sarawak Shooting Association to thank and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the athletes.

According to Sarawak Weightlifting Association president Gerald Rentap Jabu, the incentives were meant to pay tribute to the athletes who have put so much effort in the Sukma.

“I understand it is very challenging for you all, especially the bowling team. You have brought home seven golds and we are hoping to win more golds in the 2020 Sukma in Johor,” he said during the Sukma Incentive Presentation at Lil Baba Restaurant, Megalanes Batu Kawa, here, yesterday.

He said the achievements in sports were not only from the athletes but also included sacrifices from the coaches and parents.

“In the 2020 Sukma, bowling has 11 games, shooting 26 games and weightlifting has 40 games, all of which will offer a total of 77 golds,” he said.

He said the State contingent are targeting to win about 60 percent of the gold medals in the three sports and if the athletes are able to achieve beyond the target, then Sarawak can become the champions in next Sukma.

“We have two more years to prepare, so let’s all work hard for the sake of Sarawak,”  he added.

Meanwhile, Amateur Bowling (Tenpin) Association Sarawak president, Sunny Si said each time the athletes won they put a smile on the faces of their coaches and brought tears of joy.

“We are very proud when you win and sing the Sarawak anthem with pride,” he said.

He urged the athletes not to give up their quest but continue to do their best in bringing up Sarawak’s name not only in Malaysia but to the world.
