KUCHING: Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd and Shell Singapore Pte. Ltd. (SSPL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the potential of chemical recycling for plastic waste yesterday.

The MoU exchange ceremony took place at Trienekens’ Headquarters here and was witnessed by Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni.

“This collaboration signifies a significant step towards achieving a circular economy and sustainable plastic waste management solutions in the region,” said Trienekens in a press release.

Hazland commended both companies for their efforts in developing sustainable solutions, aligning with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS2030).

“Collaborations within the expert industries are crucial and highly welcomed as they help to realise Sarawak’s ambition and vision to transition our current linear economy into a circular economy. With forward-thinking innovations and technology, we can progress towards improved resource management, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and increased economic growth,” he said.

The chief executive officer (CEO) of Trienekens Group, Stephen Chin, highlighted the company’s research on chemical recycling as a potential method for addressing plastic waste.

“Through the partnership with Shell, we aim to explore the technological and economic potential of chemical recycling, which can contribute to the circularity of plastic waste and advance the circular economy,” he added.

Shell’s Vice President for Business Management, Chan Win Sim, said that the assessment would involve evaluating the economic viability of options available for municipal solid waste. He hoped that with favorable findings, they could present recommendations to the state government in support of chemical recycling.

The MoU exchange event was attended by Country Chair of Shell Malaysia and Senior Vice President Upstream Malaysia, Siti Sulaiman.
