KUALA LUMPUR: Three individuals including former DAP member, Hew Kuan Yau, were called up yesterday to give statements at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman concerning the publication of a comic alleged to contain propaganda.

Principal Assistant Director of the Prosecution and Legal Division D5 of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, SAC Mior Faridalathrash Wahid, when contacted said Hew and two other individuals would be present to give the statements this afternoon.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador was reported as saying that police had taken a statement from the artist of the comic entitled Inisiatif Jalur dan Jalan Meraih Manfaat Bersama (Belt and Road Initiative for Win Winism) last Friday.

On Oct 18, Home Affairs Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin stated that initial reports by the security division of the ministry found that there were wrong facts in the comic, thus it was appropriate that action be taken on those who published and distributed the comic.

Recently, the media reported that the comics were distributed in Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan (SMJK) and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) in the country.

Meanwhile, Abdul Hamid has urged families of those detained on suspicion of involvement in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorist group to be patient pending completion of the investigation.

He said police still needed to investigate the 12 individuals who included two state assemblymen from Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, who were detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

“The investigating team is expediting to complete the investigation papers for submission and further action by the Attorney General’s Chambers, on whether to reject or bring the cases to court,” he said to reporters after launching the Royal Malaysia Police sports awards ceremony at the Police Training Centre here.

“I sympathise with the families as Deepavali is approaching. But we have to act in the interest and for security (of our country). For the families who are unhappy, please bear with us.

“Rest assured the detainees are well taken care of and we will allow them any right that is within the confines of the law. Their families can visit. We will allow them,” he said.

Some family members of the detainees had gathered in protest since Tuesday at Bukit Aman, and to urge police to release and allow their loved ones to celebrate Deepavali. – Bernama
