KUCHING: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang has urged the people to get involved in their community, either through volunteering, donating or raising awareness.
He said it is important to give back and help those who are less fortunate.
Speaking at the inaugural Humanitarian Partner Appreciation Day at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he said it is easy to get caught up in one’s own life and forget about the needs of others in today’s world.
“Society’s true measure is not its economic success or military might, but how it treats its most vulnerable members.
“Community service and humanitarian work come in many forms, from simple activities such as volunteering at a beach clean-up to more involved activities such as organising fundraisers, repairing a leaking roof, or donating wheelchairs to the sick, impaired and old,” he said.
Lo added that community service and humanitarian work have a profound impact on the lives of both the beneficiaries and the volunteers’ own lives.
Volunteering, he said, helps develop valuable skills, including teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, while fostering a greater appreciation for the challenges others face, and cultivates empathy and compassion.
He emphasised that community service and humanitarian work are essential for building strong and resilient communities.
“When people come together to help each other, they create a sense of unity and solidarity that transcends race and religion.
“Together, let us build a brighter future for ourselves and our children,” he added.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday (May 13) honoured 14 humanitarian partners at their inaugural Humanitarian Partner Appreciation Day.
The purpose of the event was to gather organisations that the Church collaborated with in 2022 to carry out various humanitarian projects in Sarawak and to commemorate their efforts to serve those in need.
Partners include the Rotary Club and Red Crescent Society, Cheshire Homes, CLAPAM, as well as newer groups like P.O.C.S, SCAN and other groups.
