Trusan hydroelectric project in Lawas is still at the early stage of development with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) reviewing the feasibility of the project.
Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Datuk Liwan Lagang stated that an earlier engagement was conducted in 2013 at Lawas town together with leaders representing communities residing along Trusan River.
“Social and Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) will only be conducted if this project is found feasible for implementation.
He said this when replying to Ba’Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian on the status of the proposed Trusan Dam and its consultation with the community living in the affected area during the question-and-answer session at State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.
However, Liwan stated that the cost of the project would only be known after the feasibility is completed.
“Therefore, SEB is still engaging with the consultants on the cost of the project,” he added.
When asked on the extent of Brunei’s involvement in Trusan Dam, Liwan added that the Ministry is still waiting for the consultants on the project.
Earlier, Brunei has expressed interest in Sarawak’s hydropower supply via the Trusan Dam in Lawas.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan had said that the country would be interested in acquiring an equity or share in the dam.
“Previously, Brunei has expressed their interest. On our side, we are open to cooperating with them to develop the dam.
“We have in fact conducted feasibility and technical studies on the dam. If we proceed with the construction and Brunei is still interested, we are open about it,” he said.
