KUCHING: State Reform Party Sarawak (STAR) is placing its trust in the government through the Malaysian Embassy in Cambodia to bring home 44 Sarawakians safely.
Its president Lina Soo said the matter involved G2G (government to government) and only the Malaysian government can negotiate with its Cambodian counterpart.
“No political party should interfere. We have to leave the matter to our Foreign Affairs Office to bring them home safely,” she told New Sarawak Tribune here yesterday.
She was sure that the state government knew about the matter but the names of the 44 could not be revealed to the public to protect them and their family members.
“This is an international matter between governments. We have to place our trust in the Federal government to negotiate and bring them home safely.”
Soo, who is also the founder of Sarawak Baru, said it was important to remind Sarawakian youths to be cautious of high paying jobs in foreign countries.
“Please seek advice from our Human Resource Ministry or department first before agreeing to any jobs offered in foreign countries.”
On Thursday, Julau Member of Parliament Larry Sng in a press conference said that 47 Malaysians had been detained by Cambodian authorities since Dec 16. Forty-four of them are Sarawakians.
They were arrested in a private home by Cambodian police on online gaming charges and have not been brought to court to be charged or remanded.
