KUCHING: The TSI Leadership Programme for Sarawak Ethnic Minorities leaving participants with a strong understanding and respect for the diverse cultures in Sarawak.
The programme’s closing event took place today (Sept 2) over Zoom, led by Jayl Langub, a respected Associate Research Fellow from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s Institute of Borneo Studies.
This lecture series aimed to share important information about the 34 different ethnic communities in Sarawak, including their culture, demographics, and socio-economic aspects.
The lectures featured insights from both local experts and those from outside the state which helped participants gain a thorough understanding of Sarawak’s diverse ethnic makeup.
A notable highlight was the unveiling of lesser-known ethnic groups such as Tabun, Remun, Ukit, Vaie, and more. These smaller communities, often overlooked, were given attention, promoting a better understanding of their cultures and contributions.
The programme also included interactive elements, including a question-and-answer session after Jayl’s lecture. This allowed participants to directly interact with the speaker and deepen their understanding of the topics.
Jayl is a retired civil servant, holds a B.A. in anthropology from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and an M.A. in community development from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
