KUCHING: The hardships of life through the years have become a strength for Rini Kana, 40, who ventured into the cake business.

According to this Iban woman from Marudi, Baram, her involvement in business comes from her mother’s enterprise as a cake seller when she was a child.

“I am one of the cake suppliers for the Mita brand in the Miri area.

“Before doing the Mita cake business, I also used to sell cakes and biscuits that I made myself, especially during Gawai and Christmas,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.

According to her, the cake business she runs is a source of side income in addition to venturing into other jobs on a normal day.

“I became interested in running a cake business when I saw many people opening orders for customers online.

“From there, it started to cross my mind to try my luck since Mita’s cake received a favourable response from customers in the peninsula and Sabah,” she said.

She established her cake business at the beginning of 2020, with as many as 20 boxes of the first cake made by herself with a capital of RM300.

“This business is 100 per cent done by myself through various methods for me to advance.

“Among them are opening orders on the Facebook page every week so that many people are aware of my sales products,” she said.

Although it was not well received at the beginning, over time Mita’s cake sales and the cakes she made gained a place in the hearts of customers.

“From 20 boxes at the beginning, the orders I received from customers began to increase from week to week.

“Now it can be said that every order I get reaches 100 to 150 for products from Mita Cake House Kuching,” she added.

Before this, Rini had also visited the Sugarbomb branch in Miri owned by her sister, as a site to sell handmade cakes.

“Now I have moved operations to a new address which is Marina Phases 2 and also a branch in Pelita.

“I did not think that I would become famous for selling Mita cakes and have many acquaintances who are now regular customers.

“Apart from Sabah, the response from customers in the peninsula is also relatively high so far,” said Rini.

According to her, all the Mita cakes sold are on average at RM21 except for the banana and honey flavours which are priced at RM18 and RM19 respectively.

“I’m sure all Mita cake customers know the special features and advantages of this cake each based on what they taste.

“I hope that one day I will be able to open a Mita Cake franchise in Miri to make it easier for fans who want to buy in this area,” she added.

She also added that the Mita cake sells very well, especially during the festive season.
