KUCHING: Her interest in baking cakes grew after watching the TV show “Cake Boss”.
Patricia Engsingan Seliman, 32, is from Ulu Luau Awik Saratok but grew up in Kota Samarahan.
At first, she had no confidence in starting a baking business but after getting the encouragement and support from her husband and family members, she began selling budget cakes and melted cheese.
“I started doing business full-time in 2017. From a budget cake business, I now accept orders for birthday cakes, wedding cakes, engagement cakes and various desserts such as melted cheese, brownies, cupcakes and so on,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.
The mother of two does her business from home with the help of her husband as her runner for the delivery of customer orders.
“I faced many challenges throughout this journey, for example, I have many competitors in my residential area.
Therefore, I am always looking for different and more creative ideas.
“In addition, I had to juggle between being a mother and an entrepreneur. But I’m thankful my children are very understanding and they are my inspiration to chase my dream.”
She promotes her bakery business through Facebook, TikTok and WhatsApp. She is now learning to promote through Instagram and in the future, on the Grab app.
“The price for birthday cakes starts from RM40 and there is no maximum limit, depending on what the client wants. Desserts such as melted cheese are priced from RM18 and above.”
“In the ups and downs of business, sometimes I feel hopeless, disappointed and burnt out but I would always remember this verse ‘In everything you do, put God first and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success. Proverbs 3:6’.
“Not forgetting those who are my backbone – my husband, mother, children, family members and close friends, they always give words of encouragement for me to carry on,” she added.
