MUKAH: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has been identified as an enabler that will contribute to the formation of a prosperous and inclusive developing country.
Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said with the cooperation of industry that implements TVET, the problem of skills mismatch can therefore be reduced.
“We can produce graduates who meet the needs of industry who will then go on to become highly skilled workers so that they can contribute to the productivity and economic growth of the country.
“Not only that, this skill-based education is no longer the second choice because the marketability for graduates in the field of skills is very high.
“This is because learning that is based on 70 per cent practical and 30 per cent theory is a method that is demanded by industry which wants highly skilled workers,” she said.
She was speaking at the closing of the Sungai Alo Resettlement Scheme (SPS) Community Service Programme, here, today.
She said Sarawak Skills is one example of an institution that promotes TVET and now has many graduates who have gone on to be successful in their respective fields.
The government, she said, always pays attention to the development of human capital through initiatives that can improve people’s living standards.
“It involves the local community in skill activities that can generate the economy to address the income gap.
“The job market is constantly changing along with changes in the use of technology at every level of the economic sector, which requires our workforce to have complete and diverse skills to meet industry’s tastes,” she explained.
Towards this end she hoped that Sarawak Skill would organise more related programmes to improve the skills and knowledge of the people in the Mukah area.
The Community Service Programme was participated by a total of 200 villagers, students and Sarawak Skills staff.
Various activities were carried out over three days from Sept 27 such as talks, mutual assistance, installation of electricity at 10 selected houses in the area.
At the same time, Bakul Rahmah donations were also given to 50 selected recipients.
Also present were the Head of Corporate Communications representing Sarawak Skills Executive Director Stanley Gona Chee Kiong, Community Service Programme Chairman Hamdiah Sazali and Sarawak Skills Center Manager Mukah Mohd Shafiq Salman Othman.
