SIBU: Sarawak has recorded 11 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 20 to date.
Deputy Chief Minister and chairman of Sarawak Disaster Management Committee Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said, of the 11 new cases, eight are in Miri, and one each in Kuching, Bintulu, and Sarikei.
He revealed this in a press conference in Sibu yesterday where he was visiting the quarantine centre for the Covid-19 cases.
He was accompanied by Deputy Health Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, Minister for Local Government and Housing Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health Dr Annuar Rapaee.
“While the eight cases in Miri are linked to the cluster attending the recent religious gathering in Sri Petaling Mosque in Kuala Lumpur, we are still identifying the source for the Kuching, Sarikei, and Bintulu cases. The State Health Department is still verifying the source,” he told newsmen.
Uggah added that as of yesterday, his committee had set up a special task group to track down over 400 travellers flying into the State through the four main airports between March 2 and 5 from Kuala Lumpur.
He again stressed the need for members of the public to maintain the highest standard of personal hygiene. He also reminded them to sanitise their hands regularly and practise social distancing in public gatherings, such as no handshakes or touching others.
Meanwhile, Aaron said that any gatherings of over 50 people should be postponed.
Chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Clarence Ting said the council would be registering all those who come to its Sanyan office from today onwards.
“We will require their full name, NRIC number, current home address and phone contact.
“I hope all organisations, if you continue with your functions please adopt this, so it will be easy for Health Department to take action,” he explained.
There will also be less rumour mongering, he added.
