Two dead, one severely burned in three-vehicle collision

SRI AMAN: A three-vehicle collision along KM35, Jalan Sri Aman-Kuching yesterday (Feb 7), left two persons dead and another severely injured.

Sri Aman acting police chief ASP Mass Nur Haslinda Abdullah said the accident involving a motorcycle, a lorry and a car, happened near Gua Ming around 1pm.

“The collision occurred when a motorcycle ridden by a 50-year-old man, was overtaking a vehicle in front of him when it collided with an oncoming lorry driven by a 56-year-old man.

“Because of that, the lorry skidded and collided into an oncoming car driven by a 22-year-old man. Both vehicles crashed into a ditch and burst into flames moments later,” she said.

The impact of the collision claimed the lives of the motorcyclist Jerawi Gundam, 50, and 17-year-old Valen Ting Hui Hui, a back seat passenger of the car.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics and their bodies were taken to Sri Aman Hospital for a post-mortem.

Haslinda said the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and those who witnessed the accident are urged to contact Sri Aman district police headquarters (IPD) at 083-322121/267.

Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported that the lorry driver suffered 90 per cent burns and is currently being treated at Sri Aman Hospital.

The car driver and two other passengers as well as the lorry attendant were lightly injured.
